Ilryong Moon
School Board member, At-Large

Born in Korea, Ilryong Moon emigrated to the U.S. in 1974 in the middle of high school. As an ESL student, he repeated his sophomore year and graduated from the then T.C. Williams Senior High School in Alexandria City in 1977. He became the first in his family to graduate from high school and college. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and Juris Doctor law degree from The College of William and Mary.  Mr. Moon’s service on the Fairfax County School Board began in July 1995, first as an appointed at-large member for six months before being elected to represent the Braddock District from 1996 to 1999. He then served on the Fairfax County Planning Commission for four years and returned to the School Board as an at-large member in 2004. He continued to serve on the School Board until retiring in 2019. He decided to return to the School Board and is now serving his 6th elected term from January 1, 2024. While on the Board, he had served three terms as Chairman and three terms as Vice Chairman

An attorney practicing law locally for 40 years, Mr. Moon is the proud father of two FCPS graduates (2006 & 2009) and now has one grandchild. The main gymnasium at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was named after him in 2021.

Mr. Moon had previously served on numerous community and government organizations, boards, and committees, including EduTutor of Virginia, American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras, Fairfax-Falls Church Regional Council of United Way, Virginia State Advisory Committee of U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Virginia Governor Kaine’s Urban Policy Task Force, and Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. His current volunteer activities include teaching adult ESL and Sunday school, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for NAKS-Washington Association for Korean Schools. He has also been a member of Annandale Rotary Club since 1998.
